Food & Drink
Christian and I like to think we are foodies. I love experimenting in the kitchen (with mixed results) and we love dining out too. When we eat out, we hope to make it count. Here are my thoughts on some of the eateries in the region we’ve tried on several occasions. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Hopefully, you’ll find my comments useful and above all else, you’ll have a great culinary experience. I would recommend in all cases you book ahead to avoid disappointment. Bon Appetit. Victoria
The Hotham Arms, Hotham. YO43 4UD (half a mile)
Landlord Joe Parkinson you could describe as being a very interesting character. The Hotham Arms is extremely popular in the area, has a great atmosphere and the food is hearty. His specialities are: fantastic steaks, homemade fishcakes (to die for) and beef stroganoff. Be sure to book early. Even on cold, dark winter evenings, Joe makes the place very welcoming with big open log fires.

The Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham, York YO43 3JA.
The Goodmanham Arms is a gem of a pub in our area, run by a couple with real character and a flair for giving customers what they want. Christian stopped for a pint with a friend recently and said the atmosphere was terrific. This place is well worth dropping into especially if you like good food and a great pint. Nellies, Beverley, HU17 8BN.
If you're in Beverley, you must venture as far as Nellies for a drink at least. Its real name is The White Horse, but is known as Nellies and is legendary in these parts. You haven't lived if you've never been to Nellies. True drinking man's pub. Very atmospheric. A step back in time.

1884 Dock Street Kitchen, Marina, Hull. HU1 1TB (17 miles – approx 20 mins by car)
Looking for somewhere smart to eat, with someone special, and a city vibe to boot, then this restaurant has to be a winner. The food is superb. I ate the best crab dish I’ve ever tasted at 1884 and it was followed by the most delicate and delicious tarte tatin I’ve ever had the fortune to try. Ensure you book ahead, this place is popular.

Winteringham fields, 1 Silver Street, Winteringham, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, dn15 9ND (20 miles – 30 mins by car)
We think Colin McGurran Chef and owner of Winteringham Fields is one very very talented man. Why? Because we’ve tasted his brilliance first hand on a plate and he most certainly delivers with flavours. We can’t recommend WF highly enough, this restaurant experience will knock your socks off. The tasting menus are to die for, be sure to choose the legendary tomato dish and if you are a ‘grand fromage‘ lover, then you’ll find yourself in heaven with Colin’s incredible cheeseboard. Life’s for living.
Carluccios, 7 Toll Gavel, Beverley HU17 9AA (10 miles, 20 mins by car)
Situated in the top right hand corner of Saturday Market in Beverley at the bottom of Toll Gavel, the national chain of Italian restaurants opened its Beverley offer a few months ago. Perfect for a casual lunch after a little shopping, I’d say.
Pizza Express, 37 North Bar Within, Beverley, Yorkshire HU17 8BD (10 miles, 20 mins)
Located close to North Bar Within, this Pizza Express must be one of the most popular in Yorkshire. Perfect for tea with the kids. You can ‘walk-in’ but you will probably have to wait to be seated.
The Westwood Restaurant, New Walk, Beverley HU17 7AE. (11 miles, 17 mins by car)
The ‘go-to’ restaurant in the historic market town of Beverley, this chic venue is situated in a converted Georgian Court House. Service is usually excellent and the food is the ‘Best of British’.
